Is there a first principle of Operational Excellence? If someone asked that question, many of us would probably start listing Lean concepts like respect for people, continuous improvement, flow, standard work, or problem solving. Those are all foundational to Operational Excellence, but after years of working with organizations and reflecting on what separates lasting transformations from temporary improvements, I've become convinced there is a principle that comes before every one of them.

The first principle is humility.

At first, that might seem like an unusual answer. Humility isn't a Lean tool. It isn't a statistical method. It isn't part of a value stream map or a Kaizen event. Yet when I think about every successful improvement effort I've been part of, humility was always present, whether we recognized it or not.

I've worked with many organizations over the years that invested heavily in Operational Excellence. They implemented Lean tools, improved processes, mapped value streams, conducted rapid improvement events, and introduced daily management systems. Some of those organizations achieved remarkable results that lasted for years. Others experienced improvements that slowly disappeared, even though they were using many of the same tools.

That contrast caused me to ask an important question: Why do some improvements last while others fade away?

The more I worked with leaders and teams, the more convinced I became that sustainable Operational Excellence is not just about tools or systems. It is about the people who lead them. Processes can be documented, standards can be written, and visual controls can be installed, but none of those things can replace the daily influence of a leader whose character shapes the culture of an organization.
